In Search

2008
Videoinstallation with various loops on varoius amount of monitors.

On July 9 1975, artist Bas Jan Ader hoisted sails on his little boat Ocean Wave in an attempt to cross the Atlantic Sea alone. The trip was part of the performance suite In Search of the Miraculous. Whose first part was a nocturnal walk through Los Angeles, from Aders house down to the sea, documented with photographs. The final section would be an exhibition at the museum in Aders hometown Groningen, in Holland, but he never arrived. The boat was found 9 months after departure, capsized off the coast of Ireland. His remains are still not found.

Bas Jan Ader's work has had a significant influence on the shaping of my own practice, therefore I have appropiated title of his last wok. Ader has in turn taken the name from the Russian author Petyr Demianovich Ouspenskys book with the same name. The aesthetics of my installation, however, recalls little about Aders work. Rather than reducing the scale, I have aimed at playing the entire registry.

My version of In Search of the Miraculous is a videoinstallation with various amount of monitors (18 belove) each with different loops. All the material is found an downloaded from the net, currently 106 clips. It is an attempt at making a subjective map of humanity's constant quest for new discoveries, new solutions, new records, new opportunities, new ways to make life bearrable, enjoyable and interesting.
